Back to Ward

Back to Ward, originally uploaded by mozealou.

Rode back to Ward today. Much faster today and started at my house which added about 17 miles.

Stats:
50 miles
15.4 mph
Max elevation: 9200 ft

It was much harder today, but lots of cyclists out today.

Also heard Lance Armstrong used this ride as a training ride for the Leadville 100…but Lance would ride it twice in a row.

Above is another pic of Ward…which is known for the number of broken down vehicles that line the road.

Also, if you get a chance, check out the Wikipedia entry for Ward, it is actually really interesting.

Ride to Ward and back…finally.

So I finally did the ride to Ward and back today.  I cut out of work around 3:30, and was a little short on time, so I drove over to the beginning of Left Hand Canyon so I didn’t have to bother doing any pesky flat riding.

I was a little shocked at how hard this ride was.  As you can see by the elevation profile it is basically all uphill, and steep to Ward.  You might see a couple of dips in the elevation profile, but I can honestly say that those dips were not there…it was uphill the entire way.  The good news is that it is only uphill on the way there, on the way back you don’t have to touch your pedals (honestly) and you will average between 20-40 mph.  It was funny, at about 5 miles into the ride I saw a sign that said “10.5 miles to Ward”, and at the time I was averaging about 10mph, so I was like, “no prob, I’ll be there in an hour.”  After what seemed like an eternity I looked back down at my computer and saw that I was now 8 miles from ward, problem was I was now going 8 mph…”Fuck,” I thought, “that means I still have an hour,” and decided then to stop looking at my computer, which I did, until I was about 2 miles from Ward, and at I checked my computer again, and now I was going 4 mph (it gets damn steep right before you hit town).  I quickly did the math and thought, “I still have 30 minutes of uphill”?  Luckily it leveled off a bit, and I was able to make it there in less than 30 minutes.  Then came the downhill!

It took me 1:40 minutes to get to Ward, and only 26 minutes to get back (crazy huh?).  The downhill was sick…super fast, and almost no traffic.  You can ride the entire road the whole way back, and you almost never see a car.

Here are the stats for the ride:
Distance: 32.7 Mi
Speed: 14.3 mph
Elevation gain: 4701 ft
Max Elevation: 9304 ft (WOW!!!!)

Elevation Profile:

Now for the photos:

Start.  The road goes through Left Hand Canyon, which is dead ahead.

This is a picture of the Long Road Ahead.  About 9 miles into the ride.

Cool looking wooden wagon.  You see stuff like this all along the ride.  Looked pretty, so I took the photo.

Downtown Ward.  Seriously, that is the downtown.  Don’t plan on buying gatorade with a credit card, they don’t accept it.

More Ward.

Seen enough of Ward?  Me too, I am heading home.

That’s it folks, after I took that last photo I raced back to the car.  Only took 26 minutes (I know I mentioned that already).

Succesful Tour De Cure

Wow what a great ride! Yesterday’s metric century (100k-62 miles) was a
great ride, and it was the strongest I have felt on a ride of that
distance ever. I averaged 17 mph, and finished the 62 mile ride in
3:40, which I was very happy about considering I rode alone most of the
day, and almost the entire second half of the event there wasn’t a
person within a half mile of me either way (I was towards the front, not
the back).

If you have not done so, check out my photos of the event that were
posted as I rode. I actually got a strong talking to at one of the rest
stations for breaking out my cell phone…a volunteer let me know it was
the weekend, and I shouldn’t be working. I told her that I was actually
blogging about the ride, and she forgave me.

As usual I got a couple of questions about the jersey and the team,
which was cool.

In total I raised $235 for the ADA (American Diabetes Assocaition),
which should help Jay Cutler, and those like Jay Cutler cope with, and
raise awareness of the disease. Thanks to all those who sponsored me,
and all those that supported me, and many thanks to Erika, and my dogs
for being there at the finish of the ride, it was good to see some
familiar faces.

I reached my goal

I pledged to to raise 150$ for the Tour De Cure, and thanks to generous donations by the Madiah brothers, Arlyn Asch, Shawn Doherty, Jared Jones and Andy Karydes, I was able to smash that goal and raise $235.  Thanks to everyone who donated, and another thanks to all those that support me.

Wish me luck tomorrow!

Big ass beers after MTB ride

Big ass beers after MTB ride, originally uploaded by mozealou.

Friend Erik and I did a 14-16 mile mountain bike ride today. There was some serious elevation gain as we were in Morison, CO. Was tired after the ride…was exhausted after the 34oz beer after the ride.

Bummer I didn’t get any route photos. I think Erik appreciated that I didn’t bring much water, and had to bogart his. Mental note, one 12oz water bottle is not enough in 90 degree heat on a 30lb bike.

Has been raining cats and dogs here in Boulder, ride isn’t happening today. Hopefully will happen tomorrow…worst case Monday afternoon. Feels like January in San Diego.
